Aketegi erpina

Aketegi erpina is a mountain summit in the Basque range with steep slopes featuring rocky outcrops on both its northern and southern sides. The peak reaches approximately 1,548 meters and offers expansive views of the surrounding valleys from the top.

The mountain sits along a historic trading route that connected the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Alava in medieval times. This passage relied on the nearby San Adrian tunnel as a crossing point between regions for centuries.

Sheep graze on the slopes following age-old pastoral traditions, with their milk used to produce the region's famous Idiazabal cheese. This farming practice shapes both the landscape and daily life in the area today.

Hikers reach the summit via marked trails starting from Zegama, with spring and autumn providing the best conditions due to mild temperatures. During these seasons the paths are dry and weather patterns remain stable for a full day outing.

The peak serves as a key control point during the annual Zegama-Aizkorri mountain running marathon, attracting runners from different countries. This demanding race uses the summit as a central stage, making it a recognized destination in the international trail running scene.
