Puertollano

Puertollano is a municipality in Ciudad Real Province, central Spain, sitting between the Inner Plateau and the foothills of Sierra Morena. The town stands at 708 meters elevation and serves as a local center for surrounding settlements and villages in the area.

The discovery of coal deposits in 1873 transformed the small settlement into a major mining center, with growth peaking during the First World War. Archaeological finds indicate earlier occupation during the Bronze Age and Visigoth periods.

The name comes from "Puerto Llano," meaning flat pass, reflecting the geography of this route through the mountains. Visitors today see a working town where heavy industry coexists with everyday residential neighborhoods and local shops.

The Madrid-Seville high-speed train line stops here several times daily, connecting travelers to other parts of Spain. The town is accessible by main roads from surrounding provinces, with parking available in the center.

The nearby Campo de Calatrava volcanic area contains iron-rich water springs, including the natural Fuente Agria fountain with its mineral-laden water. Visitors can explore these geological features in the surrounding countryside.
