Province of Ciudad Real, Administrative province in Castile-La Mancha, Spain
Ciudad Real is an administrative province in the autonomous community of Castilla–La Mancha, central Spain. The territory covers wide plains, gentle ridges, and scattered mountain ranges, bordered by six neighboring provinces.
The province formed in 1833 during Spain's administrative reform, bringing together lands that had belonged to different historical kingdoms. It took its name from the town founded by the Castilian king in the 13th century.
The name points to the medieval settlement established under royal protection. Visitors today notice vineyards spreading across gentle hills and flat plains, reflecting centuries of winemaking tradition that shapes daily life in many towns.
Travelers cross the territory mainly by car or public transport linking larger towns. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions, when temperatures are mild and fields turn green or golden.
The Campo de Calatrava holds volcanic cones formed by ancient eruptions that ended thousands of years ago. Some craters now shelter small lakes that warm in summer and attract waterbirds.
