Castle of la Muela, Medieval castle on Cerro Calderico, Consuegra, Spain
Castle of la Muela sits at the summit of Cerro Calderico and combines square structures with cylindrical towers and thick defensive walls. The complex includes water cisterns, a chapter house, archive rooms, a chapel, watchtowers, terraces, gardens, and a defensive outwork.
The fortress was given to the Knights Hospitaller by King Alfonso VIII in 1183, serving as their main headquarters and residence for important leaders. The castle maintained its defensive role and structures through the centuries.
The name refers to its hilltop location, and visitors can observe how different communities used the spaces within. Rooms for daily activities, water storage systems, and administrative areas tell the story of who lived and worked here.
Visitors can access about half of the restored castle structure and explore the original layout. The site is accessible but comfortable shoes are recommended, and you should allow time to explore the various levels and sections.
Reaching the castle's center requires passing through seven separate gates, a feature reflecting its layered defense strategy. The towers rise steeply, creating an imposing profile as you approach the site.
