Consuegra, Medieval hilltop castle and twelve windmills in Toledo Province, Spain

Consuegra is a small town perched on a hill in Toledo Province with a stone castle and twelve white windmills. The castle sits at about 700 meters elevation, while the windmills line the ridge of Cerro Calderico hill.

After the Christian reconquest in 1085, the Knights Hospitaller took control and transformed the castle into a military fortress against Moorish forces. This strategic role shaped the town's development for centuries.

The October saffron festival brings the community together to celebrate the local spice-growing tradition with cooking demonstrations and market stalls. The event reflects how deeply this crop is woven into daily life and local pride.

The town is reachable by regional buses from Toledo, about 60 kilometers away, with daily service options available. The best time to visit is autumn when the saffron festival takes place and the weather is mild.

One windmill, the Molino Sancho, retains its grain-milling mechanisms from the 16th century and comes alive during special demonstrations. This working mill offers visitors a rare glimpse into the historic craft techniques that sustained the area.
