Complutense University of Madrid is a public university in the Ciudad Universitaria district of Madrid, Spain. The main campus spreads over several areas with additional facilities in Somosaguas near Pozuelo de Alarcón.
The university was founded in 1293 as a studium generale in Alcalá de Henares by King Sancho IV of Castile. During the 20th century it moved its main seat to Madrid and occupied the current campus.
The library holds several million volumes and opens its reading rooms to all students and researchers. Many buildings carry names of figures from Spanish scientific and literary tradition.
