Lebrija, Municipality in Seville Province, Spain.
Lebrija is a municipality in Seville Province situated on the left bank of the Guadalquivir River. The town spreads across gently rolling terrain in an important agricultural area where olive groves and vineyards define the landscape.
The settlement grew from a Phoenician foundation called Lepriptza into a Roman port city known as Nabrissa. It came under Castilian rule in 1264 and has remained part of that region since.
The Santa María de la Oliva church displays a mix of Mudéjar, Renaissance, and Baroque styles that define the town's character. It reflects the architectural layers that shaped the community across centuries.
The town is best explored by car, as the surrounding hamlets and fields are spread out across the region. Visitors will find rural calm here, but should plan their visits ahead since some locations require deliberate travel.
Antonio de Nebrija, born here in 1444, published in 1492 the first grammar study of a modern European language and served as tutor to Queen Isabella. His work laid the groundwork for scientific language study across the continent.
