St. Margaret's Church

St. Margaret's Church is a Gothic monastery church in Palma de Mallorca constructed with a wooden roof supported by five diaphragm arches and an octagonal ribbed vault apse. Lateral chapels line the interior space, with slender columns supporting the vaulting of the apse.

The building was constructed in 1236 following Mallorca's conquest and originally served as part of an Augustinian monastery until 1836. After that date it was converted into a military facility and took on new roles.

The church contains a striking Gothic sepulcher from the 13th century that connects visitors directly to the period following Mallorca's conquest, offering insight into the artistic traditions of that era. Such burial monuments reveal the sculptural skill valued by the island's medieval society.

The site functions today as a military parish church and also houses a museum dedicated to military history and culture that is open to visitors during regular hours. It is advisable to check opening times beforehand to ensure access matches your visit schedule.

The baptistery in the first right chapel features vault ribs that end in four corbels carved with detailed depictions of the four evangelists. These decorative elements are easy to overlook but reward close attention for their sculptural quality.
