Praileaitz Cave

Praileaitz is a cave system with multiple chambers in the Deba region, whose walls feature red dots and abstract lines. The cave extends through underground passages and halls where portable art objects were also discovered.

The site was discovered through archaeological excavations in 2006, revealing artworks from approximately 18,000 years ago. These findings dated to a period when people in this region had already developed complex artistic forms of expression.

The red dots on the walls show how early people perceived their surroundings and expressed themselves through art. These marks were part of an artistic tradition that spanned many thousands of years.

Visitors must register in advance to enter the cave, as access is limited to protect the site. These restrictions help preserve the ancient artwork and stone surfaces from damage caused by visitors.

Decorated stones and pendants were discovered here that show connections to other cave sites across Europe. These objects suggest that early people exchanged artistic ideas over long distances.
