Llerena, Municipality in Badajoz Province, Spain
Llerena is a town in Badajoz Province in southwestern Spain, situated at about 641 meters in elevation. It serves as the administrative and economic center for approximately 20 surrounding municipalities and features the Church of Our Lady of Granada as a major landmark in its center.
The town came under the control of the Order of Santiago in 1243 after Pelayo Pérez Correa recaptured it from Arab forces. Later, in 1508, one of the most influential courts of its kind was established here.
The town grew as a meeting point where Christians, Jews, and Muslims coexisted, until the Jewish expulsion of 1492 shifted its population makeup. This mixing of different communities left its mark on the place for centuries.
The town is accessible via National Roads 432 and 413, making it reachable by car from neighboring regions. Visitors should check local conditions beforehand to plan their visit effectively.
The town housed one of the most important courts of the land from 1508 onward, with authority extending over a vast territory. This court operated for more than three centuries before being abolished in 1834.
