Villanueva de la Serena, Municipality in Badajoz Province, Spain.
Villanueva de la Serena is a town in Badajoz Province in western Spain, situated in flat countryside surrounded by agricultural land. The settlement spreads across several levels with a manageable historic core and modern residential areas extending outward.
The settlement arose in the 13th century under the name Aldeanueva de Medellín as a hub for managing cattle movements through the region. It later became an important trading post, gaining prosperity from its geographic position on river routes.
The town center holds several religious buildings from the early modern period that speak to its role as a stopping point along historical trade routes. The plazas and streets still carry names that recall this spiritual significance.
The town sits in flat terrain, making it easy to move around on foot, though summers can be very hot. Visitors should expect rural paths and local streets that can be narrow, and wear comfortable shoes.
The town and its neighbor Don Benito voted in 2022 to merge administratively, with the vote passing by a large majority. This consolidation created a new municipality with shared services and an expanded administrative structure.
