Encomienda Castle

Encomienda Castle, Medieval castle in Villanueva de la Serena, Spain.

Encomienda Castle is a medieval fortress on a hilltop north of Villanueva de la Serena, featuring two prominent towers on its southern side. A wall section connects these towers while defensive structures surround the complex, emphasizing its strategic design.

Construction began in 1232 when the Order of Alcantara built atop the remains of the Muslim fortress of Mojafar following King Ferdinand III's conquest. This transformation marked the establishment of Christian control in the region after the Reconquista.

The castle served as the administrative headquarters of the Order of Alcantara, a role that shaped how people viewed authority in this region. Visitors would come to conduct business with the order's representatives or seek permission for local matters.

The castle sits about 8 kilometers north of town and is privately owned, so visits require advance arrangements. It is best to contact the owners beforehand to confirm access and plan your timing accordingly.

The eastern facade displays granite columns and arches showing unexpected architectural influence that stands out in this region. The ground floor originally served as a stable and retains this working layout today, a rare feature for castles of this period.
