Basilica of Santa Maria de Ibahernando, Visigothic basilica in Ibahernando, Spain.
The Basilica of Santa Maria de Ibahernando is a Visigothic church building with rectangular walls measuring approximately 7.5 by 3.2 meters. The structure features uniform wall thickness throughout and demonstrates the straightforward architectural approach typical of this early era.
The basilica was consecrated in 635 by a bishop named Oroncio, marking an important early Christian site in the region. Systematic archaeological work in 1973 helped reveal the structure and its place in the settlement history of the area.
Archaeological findings include granite sarcophagi, funeral jars, glass ointment containers, and column fragments that document the area's early Christian settlements.
The remains are located near road CC-24.2 between Ibahernando and Santa Cruz de la Sierra on the Magasquilla de los Donaire estate. Access is straightforward due to the roadside location, though on-site facilities and visitor services are minimal.
A dedicatory inscription discovered in 1962 at the Magasquilla estate was the first of its kind found in Caceres province. This carved text provides rare written evidence of early Christian devotion at this location.
