Church of Santa María la Mayor

Church of Santa María la Mayor is a Gothic place of worship in Trujillo with three naves divided into sections and ending in a polygonal apse. The interior features a cross vault ceiling decorated with tiercerons, creating a light and elegant interior space.

Construction started in the 13th century on the site of a former Moorish mosque after Christian forces took control of Trujillo in 1232. The building marks this transition between different periods and faiths on the same sacred ground.

The altarpiece created in Fernando Gállego's workshop displays 25 painted panels showing scenes from the Virgin Mary's life and Christ's passion. Visitors can observe these detailed religious images while walking through the church and experiencing the artistic skill of the medieval period.

The church sits in the center of Trujillo and is easy to reach on foot from the main square. Visitors should dress appropriately for a place of worship, and note that the interior tends to be cool and shaded.

The church holds the tomb of Diego García de Paredes, a legendary military figure known as the Samson of Extremadura. This warrior honored in local history lies beneath the vaults of this quiet sanctuary.
