Vinuesa, municipality located in the province of Soria, Castile and León, Spain
Vinuesa is a town in Pinares Comarca with narrow cobbled streets and traditional stone houses featuring tiled roofs, situated at the foot of the Picos de Urbión and Sierra de Cebollera mountains. Surrounded by pine forests and rocky outcroppings, it features a main square and a small church called Ermita de la Soledad, with the landscape shaped by natural lakes and mountain terrain.
Vinuesa was shaped by the submerged village of La Muedra, which disappeared beneath water when a dam was built along the Duero River. The Campanario de La Muedra, a small bell tower, still stands as a visible landmark today and serves locals as a reference point for measuring the water level of the nearby reservoir.
Vinuesa keeps rural traditions alive through August festivals dedicated to the Virgin del Pino and Saint Roque. During these celebrations, locals and visitors gather to see traditional customs like raising tall pines called mayos, enjoy music and food, and witness how the community values its cultural roots.
The town is accessible year-round and offers lodging in small hotels, guesthouses, and rural homes, with camping available in warmer months. Roads are in good condition, and visitors can pursue various activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, or enjoy snow-related activities in winter.
Laguna Negra is a deep dark alpine lake surrounded by high cliffs and pine forests that feels like stepping into a fairy tale. Visitors can discover traces of the submerged village of La Muedra, where old ruins serve as reminders of the lost past and invite hikers to imagine how life existed before the water covered the land.
