Rianxo, municipality of Spain

Rianxo is a small municipality in A Coruña Province, Galicia, built on a hillside overlooking the harbor and sea. The town features narrow winding streets arranged in levels, traditional stone buildings, a lively waterfront main street lined with cafés and bars, and a historic center containing structures like the Pazo de Martelo and the Church of Santa Comba.

Rianxo developed over centuries as a fishing and port community, gaining prominence as the birthplace of major Galician writers including Daniel Alfonso Rodríguez Castelao, Manuel Antonio, and Rafael Dieste during the 19th and 20th centuries. The town also contains Bronze Age petroglyphs on Mount Pelotiña and was home to early settlements, while the Moon Castle once defended the bay.

Rianxo carries strong ties to the sea and literature, with the town serving as a birthplace for writers who championed Galician identity and language. The streets and waterfront remain active places where locals gather in cafés and bars, and monuments throughout honor figures like Castelao, whose work shaped how the community views itself and its traditions.

The town is easily explored on foot, with most sights reachable along the narrow streets and waterfront, though the terrain is hilly and requires climbing up and down multiple times. Wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time to wander slowly and pause at cafés, especially during early morning or late afternoon hours when the harbor is most active.

Rafael Dieste, a writer born in Rianxo, witnessed a whale in the waters near the town as a young boy, a rare sight that inspired him throughout his life. This childhood encounter reveals how the sea shaped the imagination of the town's writers and remains part of its living memory today.
