Xinzo de Limia, Administrative division in Ourense Province, Spain
Xinzo de Limia is a municipality nestled in a fertile valley where the Lima River flows through its territory toward the Portuguese border. The area spans gentle highlands with agricultural land and small villages typical of the Galician landscape.
The area has ancient roots and served as a significant point during Roman expansion into Galicia. The Lima River held importance in local narratives and marks evidence of early human presence in this region.
The carnival here stands as one of Galicia's largest celebrations, featuring a distinctive character called Pantalla who roams the streets creating noise with pig bladders. This tradition forms a central part of local identity and draws visitors from neighboring regions.
The location is best explored on foot, particularly during warmer months when the landscape is lush and paths are pleasant to walk. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as trails run through hilly terrain and the area rewards a slower pace of exploration.
The area grows potatoes today on a former lakebed that once held Spain's largest freshwater lake. That lake was drained in the 1950s, transforming the landscape into fertile farmland.
