Cabeza del Buey, municipality of Spain

Cabeza del Buey is a municipal district in the Spanish province of Badajoz with settlement patterns spanning thousands of years. The town contains evidence from multiple periods including prehistoric rock art sites, Roman thermal ruins from the first century, and medieval religious buildings.

People have inhabited this area since prehistoric times, as shown by ancient rock carvings. The region experienced Roman settlement with thermal baths, later saw Visigothic invasions, and underwent conflicts between Christian and Muslim forces during the medieval period.

The town's name reflects its pastoral origins from ancient times. Local traditions still show influences from the medieval period when Arab, Jewish, and Christian communities lived together, visible today in celebrations like the Feast of Saint Vincent in June or Saint Michael in September.

The town is walkable and allows visitors to explore various church buildings spanning different centuries. A visitor center with five exhibition rooms dedicated to rock art provides information about the prehistoric history of the broader region.

A grove of century-old elm trees beside the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Belén stands as one of the last large urban tree stands in all of Extremadura. The town was also birthplace of Diego Muñoz-Torrero, who helped shape the Spanish Constitution of 1812.
