Sant Martí d'Empúries

San Martín de Ampurias stands on a small peninsula along the Costa Brava, featuring Gothic architecture and narrow stone-paved streets that lead to the Mediterranean Sea.

Greeks from Massalia established this settlement as Kypsela in the 6th century BC, which later became the first county seat of Empúries until 1079.

The Church of San Martín, mentioned first in 824, contains two preserved altarpieces from the 4th century and retains elements of pre-Romanesque design.

Visitors can access the settlement through the GIP-6307 road or walk the coastal path that connects to the archaeological site of Ampurias and L'Escala.

The settlement maintains its original medieval layout at 13 meters above sea level, positioned directly above the ancient Greek Palaiópolis foundations.
