Aquarium Barcelona, Public aquarium in Ciutat Vella, Barcelona, Spain
Aquarium Barcelona is a public facility in the Gothic Quarter displaying pools with marine life from the Mediterranean Sea and tropical waters. The complex spans several floors with exhibition zones, a large central tank, and glass corridors that pass underwater.
The facility opened in early September 1995 and was part of the city's effort to redevelop the port area after the Olympic Games. Additional pools and educational programs were added in the following years, expanding the offer for school groups.
The name comes from the Latin term for a water basin, now used for any place where visitors observe live marine creatures. The entrance lies near Port Vell, where families often arrive after walking through the quarter to see the tiled pools and blue light of the galleries.
The corridors are wide and accessible at ground level, making the tour easy with a stroller or wheelchair. Those who arrive early in the morning after opening usually find fewer visitors and quieter corners by the pools.
Sand tiger sharks swim directly above visitors' heads in the tunnel section, showing their long pointed teeth behind the thick glass. This corridor is 80 meters long and offers a view of rays and morays resting in the corners of the large tank.
