Puerta de Elvira, Islamic city gate in Granada, Spain
The monumental stone entrance features a horseshoe arch with sandstone voussoirs flanked by two defensive towers made of rammed earth.
Built during the 11th century Zirid dynasty, the gate underwent substantial fortification in the 14th century under Nasrid rule as the main city entrance.
The gate marks the beginning of Elvira Street at the edge of Albaicin district, representing the transition between Islamic and Christian Granada.
The structure maintains its original medieval position at the intersection of several historical routes connecting Granada with northern territories.
A large Muslim cemetery called Ibn Malik once extended beyond the gate, now partially occupied by the Royal Hospital complex.
