Convent of Santa Isabel la Real

The Convent of Santa Isabel la Real is a Gothic structure in Albaicín with a rectangular courtyard bordered by seven arches on each level. The galleries feature wooden Mudéjar ceilings with detailed ornamental work that reflects medieval craftsmanship.

The convent was founded following Granada's conquest by the Catholic Monarchs and built upon the former site of the Moorish Dar al-Horra palace. This strategic placement symbolized Christian authority over the city's Islamic past.

The church houses religious artworks including the Virgin of the Star statue, which takes part in Granada's Easter processions and holds deep meaning for the local community.

Visitors can purchase traditional pastries made by the resident nuns through a rotating window built into the church wall. The selection changes with the season and depends on available ingredients.

The resident nuns sing their evening prayers daily at 7 PM, their voices carrying across the church from behind an iron grill. This experience offers visitors a glimpse into the daily spiritual life within the convent walls.
