Mirador de San Nicolas, Granada, Scenic viewpoint in Albaicin district, Spain
Mirador de San Nicolas is a stone terrace in the Albaicin district of Granada that sits at 760 meters elevation and opens toward the Alhambra and Sierra Nevada mountains. A low stone wall borders the paved plaza where benches and open spaces provide places to sit.
The viewpoint developed beside the San Nicolas Church, built in 1525 on the site of a former mosque. The area was transformed into a public plaza during the 20th century and opened to visitors.
Street musicians play guitars and sing Andalusian songs in the evenings while visitors gather on the steps to watch the light change. The terrace serves as a meeting point for locals who come to chat and observe the sunset over the red fortress walls.
Bus lines C31 and C32 connect Granada center with the viewpoint, and the steep lanes of Albaicin also lead here on foot. Restaurants and cafes sit within a few minutes' walk and offer places to rest before or after visiting.
President Bill Clinton visited this spot in 1997 and called it one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. His visit brought international attention and has drawn more travelers here ever since.
