Convento de la Concepción

Convento de la Concepción, convento, patrimonio histórico de Andalucía de importancia arquitectónica en Granada, España

The Convento de la Concepción is a 16th-century convent in Albaicín that combines Gothic, Mudéjar, and Baroque features throughout its spaces. An octagonal fountain sits at the center of the main courtyard.

Construction began in 1523 under the leadership of Leonor Ramírez and Diego de Bresco, when the community relocated from Calle Elvira to this location. The complex gradually became an important religious center in the neighborhood over the following centuries.

The museum displays many representations of the Immaculate Conception and painted clay figures from different periods. Visitors can see religious artworks and crafted objects that reflect the devotion of the sisters.

The convent can be visited on most days, but access is limited to certain hours and it is best to arrive early. The pathways are narrow and wind through several courtyards, so plan for a slow, leisurely exploration.

The complex incorporates several former Moorish houses that were connected through multiple courtyards, creating an unusual spatial layout. This creative reuse of older structures shows how a new religious space was adapted into pre-existing buildings.
