Basílica de San Juan de Dios, Baroque minor basilica in Granada, Spain

The Basilica of San Juan de Dios is a Baroque church in Granada recognized as a minor basilica with a Latin cross layout. Inside, a main altar decorated in gold features a central figure of the Virgin Mary surrounded by numerous saint sculptures positioned throughout the interior space.

The Hospitaller Order commissioned construction of this church in 1737 to house the remains of their patron saint. The Latin cross design was adopted as a traditional architectural form for this religious community's spiritual home.

The basilica serves as the spiritual center of the Hospitaller Order, and visitors can observe how its spaces are used for daily prayer and worship by the religious community. The presence of relics and devotional objects creates a place where people come to connect with their faith and honor the order's patron saint.

Visitors should note that opening times vary by season and can differ on weekends. It is helpful to check the current schedule before your visit to ensure the basilica is open during your planned time.

Behind the altar sits a silver urn containing personal belongings of Saint John of God. In a special chamber visitors can view the wooden cross that the saint carried during his lifetime.
