Monfragüe National Park, National park in Cáceres Province, Spain

Monfragüe is a national park in Cáceres Province, Extremadura, covering 18,396 hectares (45,440 acres) of Mediterranean forest and scrubland at the confluence of the Tajo and Tiétar rivers. The landscape consists of steep rock faces, wooded hills and open valleys through which both rivers flow.

The area gained protection as a nature park in 1979 to prevent eucalyptus plantations from replacing native forests. National park status arrived in 2007, securing the conservation of Mediterranean flora and fauna.

The Roman name mons fragorum referred to the dense forests of the mountain range and lives on in the park's present designation. A small chapel beside the castle ruins holds a 17th-century Virgin figure that walkers and locals visit.

Seven marked trails lead through the reserve and suit walking, cycling or riding, with routes ranging from 16 to 46 kilometers (10 to 29 miles) in length. Several viewpoints along the routes offer good visibility over the rock formations and rivers.

More than 200 vertebrate species inhabit the park, including Spanish imperial eagle, black vulture, Egyptian vulture and black stork, which nest among the rock cliffs. The vulture nests are often visible from viewpoints, especially during the breeding season.
