Fuente del Ángel Caído, Bronze fountain with statue in El Retiro Park, Spain
Fuente del Ángel Caído is a bronze fountain in Retiro Park in Madrid, Spain. The sculpture shows a human figure with outstretched wings in a falling pose on a granite pedestal, surrounded by water jets and figures of serpents and demons at the corners.
Sculptor Ricardo Bellver created the figure in 1877 in Rome, where it won first prize at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. The city of Madrid acquired the sculpture and placed it at its current location in Retiro Park in 1885.
The fountain takes its name from the depiction of the fallen angel, which refers to the biblical account of Lucifer's expulsion from heaven. Visitors encounter here a rare public sculpture that portrays a negative figure from Christian tradition, making the site a meeting point for conversations about religion and art.
The fountain stands at a roundabout in Retiro Park, reachable through several park entrances and nearby metro stations such as Retiro or Atocha. Morning hours often provide the best light for photos and fewer crowds around the sculpture.
The monument sits at 666 meters above sea level, a number often associated with the devil in Christian symbolism. The octagonal base shows devil figures gripping fish, lizards, and snakes in their hands, representing control over the animal world.
