Can Masdeu, Heritage farmhouse in Nou Barris, Spain
Can Masdeu is a four-story stone building containing 24 rooms that was built on the grounds of a former monastic settlement and now operates as a community center. The property spreads across approximately 15 hectares of forest land bordering Collserola National Park.
The building was constructed in the 17th century on the site of an ancient Roman settlement and later served as a leper hospital. It remained abandoned from 1948 onward until a community eventually reopened it for new purposes.
The building operates as a social hub where neighbors gather for workshops, film nights, and discussions on local and environmental topics. Different groups use the space to exchange ideas and build connections around shared concerns.
The property is generally open for visitors to explore the forests and gardens on most days. Wear good walking shoes as the paths can be uneven and the location sits in hilly terrain.
In 2002, residents successfully resisted eviction through nonviolent protest, prompting authorities to abandon their plans. This victory allowed the community to establish itself permanently and transform the site into a hub for environmental activism.
