Can Masdeu, Heritage farmhouse in Nou Barris, Spain
Can Masdeu is a multi-story stone farmhouse in the Canyelles neighborhood of Barcelona, sitting at the edge of the Collserola park. The building is surrounded by wooded land and gardens and functions today as a community center run by its residents.
The farmhouse was built in the 17th century and later used as a hospital for people with leprosy. It stood empty from 1948 until a group of people moved in and reactivated it in the early 2000s.
Can Masdeu is used today as a meeting point where people from nearby neighborhoods come together for workshops, film screenings, and talks. The gardens around the building are tended collectively, giving the place a strong sense of shared ownership.
The site is in hilly terrain at the edge of Canyelles and is reached on foot along uneven paths through the forest. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, as some sections can be steep and the ground is rough in places.
In 2002, city authorities attempted to evict the residents, who resisted through nonviolent protest and ultimately stopped the eviction. The episode drew wide attention and helped secure the community's presence at the site.
