House of Cordón

Casa del Cordón is a late Gothic civic building in Vitoria-Gasteiz with three pointed arch doorways and a medieval tower structure at its core dating from the 13th century. The exterior walls display the coat of arms of the Catholic monarchs and feature the signature decorative chain design that frames the building's character.

A medieval tower was first built on the site in the 13th century, later transformed in the 15th century by Juan Sánchez de Bilbao into the residential palace we see today. This conversion reflected the growing wealth and power of the city's merchant class.

The building gets its name from the decorative chain design adorning its entrance, a reference to the Franciscan order that held special significance in the city. This distinctive rope or chain motif remains visible on the facade today and defines much of the building's character.

The building is located on Calle Cuchillería in the historic center and can be easily found on foot when exploring the old quarter. It's best to check ahead for opening times, as the interior sometimes hosts special exhibitions or events that may affect regular access.
