Basilica of Santa María, Portugalete

The Basilica of Santa María displays Gothic and Renaissance architecture with a three-nave structure, buttresses, and an octagonal central apse at its head.

The construction of the current basilica started in 1480, replacing a smaller wooden church mandated by María Díaz de Haro in her 1322 town charter.

Pope Pius XII designated the church as a minor basilica in 1951, recognizing its role in the religious traditions of the Basque Country.

The Parish Museum, established in 1996 within the neo-Gothic sacristy, exhibits liturgical objects and images removed during the 1992 restoration.

The Salazar Chapel contains a Renaissance tomb in an arcosolium that remained hidden behind a neo-Gothic altarpiece for many years.
