Sobroso Castle, Medieval castle in Vilasobroso, Spain.
Sobroso Castle is a medieval fortress in Vilasobroso, Galicia, set on Landin Hill and overlooking the Condado valley toward the Portuguese border. Its most visible feature is a tall rectangular stone tower that rises above the rest of the structure and can be seen from the surrounding area.
The fortress dates back to the 9th century and served as a strategic control point in a border area that was fought over by Christian kingdoms throughout the Middle Ages. Over the centuries it changed hands several times, and each period left marks on the structure.
The castle today houses an ethnographic museum with everyday objects, linen weaving tools, and traditional costumes from the south of Pontevedra province. Walking through the rooms gives a direct sense of how people in this part of Galicia once lived and worked.
The site sits on a hill, so reaching it involves a short but steady climb on foot. Sturdy footwear is recommended, especially after rain when the ground can be slippery.
The name of the place comes from the Latin word SUBEROSUM, which referred to cork oak trees that once covered the slopes around the fortress. Those trees gradually disappeared, but their name stayed fixed in the landscape.
