Aliste, Rural comarca in western Zamora Province, Spain.
Aliste is a comarca, a rural region in western Zamora Province with rolling hills, dry landscapes, and oak forests. The area spans across several municipalities and is shaped by the Aliste River, which flows near the Portuguese border.
The region appeared in written records as Alesti from the 9th century onward, a name referring to the alder trees that defined the landscape. Over time it became an established agricultural area with its own local character and traditions.
The name comes from alder trees that once lined the riverbanks throughout the region. Today this connection appears in local celebrations and music traditions, where the gaita alistana, a distinctive bagpipe, remains central to community gatherings.
The main road is the N-122, which connects the different municipalities and serves as the primary route through the region. Alcañices near the center makes a good base for exploring the various parts of this area.
The Sierra de la Culebra mountain range holds the largest population of Iberian wolves on the Iberian Peninsula. This rugged terrain makes the region an important location for wildlife conservation and observation.
