The Marismas de Isla Cristina spans 21.45 square kilometers at the Carreras River mouth, featuring tidal marshes with observation points for wildlife viewing.
The natural formation of these wetlands underwent substantial changes following the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, which reshaped the local hydrography and sediment patterns.
The ecomuseum, located near a restored tidal mill, presents exhibits about traditional fishing practices and the connection between local inhabitants and the marshlands.
Visitors can explore designated paths through the marshes, with multiple bird observation stations positioned to minimize disturbance to the natural habitats.
The wetland functions as a critical stopover point for migratory birds traveling between Europe and Africa, supporting over 199 different bird species.
