Alto Tajo Nature Reserve

Alto Tajo Nature Reserve, Protected natural park in Guadalajara Province, Spain.

Alto Tajo is a protected area in Guadalajara Province featuring deep canyons where the Tagus River has carved through limestone cliffs over time. Pine forests dominate much of the landscape, creating a mix of river valleys and wooded hillsides.

The area became protected in 2000 as a way to preserve its natural systems and wildlife. This decision helped safeguard the landscape and the animals living here for future generations.

The villages dotting the park's edges show how local life has remained intertwined with the forest and river rhythms for generations. People here still follow traditional ways of living that shape how the landscape looks and feels today.

Start at the visitor center in Corduente to get trail maps and information about the best places to explore. Bring proper hiking shoes and be ready for changing weather, as conditions in the canyons can shift quickly.

The reserve is home to one of Spain's largest otter populations, living in the river's clearer waters. At the same time, golden eagles and griffon vultures hunt from the high rocky cliffs above.
