Embassament de Beniarrés, stuwmeer in Alicante, Spanje
The Embassament de Beniarrés is a large water storage facility in the province of Alicante, standing about 53 meters high above its surroundings. The concrete dam holds water that flows from the Serpis river and primarily supplies irrigation for the nearby fields while controlling river flow during heavy rains.
The dam was constructed in 1958 and marked a major step forward for local agriculture and water management in this semi-arid region. Since then it has become a permanent part of the landscape, reflecting regional efforts to secure water resources for the community.
The reservoir has become a central gathering place where locals celebrate festivals and spend time together with family and friends. People share homemade food and traditions by the water, reflecting the rural way of life that defines this region.
The reservoir is easily accessible by car with parking spaces nearby so visitors can enjoy the views comfortably. Bring water and sunscreen since there are no shops directly at the water, and it is best to prepare snacks and supplies beforehand.
In recent years the site has become popular for birdwatchers as various bird species visit the water to feed and nest. The water levels that change throughout the year create different habitats that attract diverse wildlife throughout the seasons.
