Benínar Reservoir, reservoir in Spain
Benínar Reservoir is a water storage basin in Almería Province, created by a dam approximately 90 meters high. The water spreads across open countryside, reflecting the sky and surrounded by distant hills on all sides.
The dam was built in the 1980s to control river flow and prevent flooding in the region. Since completion, it has become essential for water supply to farms and communities in Almería Province.
The reservoir is easily accessible via small country roads and requires no special permits to visit. Spring and early summer are the best times when weather is warm but not too hot, making walks along the water comfortable.
The original village of Benínar once stood where the reservoir now lies, submerged beneath the water. This submerged community represents the trade-off between water management needs and local heritage.
