Almería Province, Province in southeastern Spain
Description
Almería Province is an administrative region in southeastern Spain that stretches from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the Mediterranean coast in Andalusia. The landscape shifts between dry hills, coastal strips, and intensively farmed areas covered by greenhouses.
History
During Islamic rule beginning in 711, the region grew into a key center for silk and maritime trade, until Christian forces took control in 1489. After that period, its importance as a trading hub declined, until intensive agriculture began in the 20th century.
Culture
The western film sets built decades ago still stand in the semi-desert areas north of the coast, and visitors can walk through the empty streets and props. These locations attract people interested in cinema history and the look of old American frontier towns.
Practical
Coastal towns offer hotels and restaurants, while the inland mountains have less infrastructure and suit travelers with their own vehicle better. Summer temperatures can be very high, so spring or autumn is more comfortable for trips.
Did you know?
The Calar Alto Observatory sits in the mountains and uses the particularly dry climate with little cloud cover for astronomical observations. German and Spanish researchers work together there on projects exploring space.
