Tabernas Desert, Desert area in Almería Province, Spain
Tabernas Desert is a desert landscape in Almería Province that stretches between three mountain ranges and is marked by erosion formations and sparse plant life. Dry ravines cut through the terrain, while scattered shrubs and grasses grow between the clay hills.
Archaeological finds document human settlements in this region since the Bronze Age. The area received the status of a protected natural zone in the mid-twentieth century.
Since the fifties, film crews have used the desert landscape as a backdrop for Western movies, including well-known productions like "A Fistful of Dollars". Three preserved film sets remain accessible and show reconstructions of saloons, banks, and main streets from that era.
The area offers marked hiking trails and guided tours that run throughout the year. The film sets are located along drivable roads and allow exploration on foot.
Temperatures fluctuate between winter frost and over 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer depending on elevation. These conditions make the area the only true desert in continental Europe.
