Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park

The park extends across 22,670 hectares of limestone mountains, featuring deep gorges, steep cliffs, and pine forests at the eastern end of Cordillera Subbética.

Archaeological investigations have uncovered settlements from Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, including the hilltop fort at Cerro de las Canteras near Corneras River.

The Cueva de los Letreros contains significant rock paintings that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site collection of Mediterranean Basin Rock Art.

Two visitor centers, Almacén del Trigo in Vélez Blanco and Mirador de la Umbría de María, provide information about hiking trails and accommodation options.

The park hosts a breeding center for spur-thighed tortoises at Las Alnohallas and shelters the Parnassius apollo butterfly, found exclusively in this region.
