Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados del Saliente

The Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados del Saliente is a monastery perched on the peak of Monte Roel in the Sierra de las Estancias, characterized by its rectangular layout with a Latin cross design and Tuscan pilasters. The structure displays the architectural hallmarks of religious buildings with a deliberately ordered geometric composition.

Construction of the monastery began in 1769 under Bishop Claudio Sanz y Torres, with architect Vicente Sánchez directing the project until completion in 1799. The building effort represented a significant ecclesiastical and architectural undertaking that spanned more than 30 years.

The sanctuary holds a Baroque image of the Virgin of the Forsaken in a decagonal chapel that draws pilgrims from across the region. For many people, this site represents an important place of religious devotion and spiritual connection.

The site is best reached via an ascent to the peak of Monte Roel, with a steep path leading to the monastery. Plan your visit with appropriate footwear and plenty of water, as the route can be challenging.

The cloister displays four bays with flattened arches supported by solid pillars, showcasing a distinctive architectural approach. The central well once served as the primary water source for the entire grounds, revealing thoughtful infrastructure design.
