Cave of the Signs

Cave of the Signs is an archaeological site near Almería featuring limestone walls carved with geometric patterns and abstract symbols. The cave contains numerous marks systematically placed throughout its chambers, displaying different forms and repetitions across the rock surface.

The marks were created during the Upper Paleolithic period, between 40,000 and 10,000 BC, by inhabitants of the region. This era saw early forms of human communication developing in cave systems across Europe.

The abstract symbols here are part of a group of 32 distinct types found across European caves, showing that prehistoric communities shared common ideas about marking their spaces. These signs reveal how people expressed their thoughts through patterns and repeating marks.

Visiting requires advance permission from local authorities, and pathways inside are protected to preserve the archaeological remains. Visitors must stay on designated routes and handle the delicate space with care.

The geometric signs here outnumber animal representations, which differs from patterns seen in other prehistoric caves. This feature makes the site especially valuable for understanding the variety of expression used by early people.
