Los Muertos Beach, Beach in Carboneras, Spain

Los Muertos Beach is a gravel shore along the Mediterranean that runs about one kilometer beneath white cliffs and can only be reached on foot. The water shows several shades of blue, and the stones along the waterline are polished smooth by the waves.

The name comes from a time when ships wrecked on the rocks during storms and bodies washed ashore here. This section of coast remained uninhabited for centuries because there was no sheltered harbor.

Fishermen from Carboneras launch their boats at the western end of the strand and sometimes sell fresh catch to visitors who stop by early in the morning. This direct connection between sea and table shows the way of life along this part of the coast.

The path down is steep over rocks and loose ground, so sturdy shoes and enough water for the return are important. Shade is only found beneath the cliffs at the edge, and the nearest shops are in the village above.

The water is so clear that snorkelers often spot barracudas and octopuses in shallow depth. This clarity comes from currents that constantly bring fresh seawater and keep suspended particles away.
