Mesa Roldán Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse on Mesa Roldán plateau, Carboneras, Spain

The Mesa Roldán Lighthouse is built on an extinct volcano and stands 18 meters tall, with its light beam reaching 222 meters above sea level. The structure operates with an automated beacon that produces four flashes every twenty seconds, visible to vessels up to 23 nautical miles away.

The structure was built in 1863 on the site of a former watchtower dating to the 15th century, serving to protect the Spanish coast from North African naval incursions. This location was strategically important for maritime defense along this Mediterranean region.

The lighthouse contains a museum dedicated to maritime navigation, where visitors can explore artifacts and learn about Spain's coastal defense system along the Mediterranean. The exhibits show how navigation techniques and maritime protection evolved in this part of the coast.

The lighthouse sits on a plateau with good sea views, though reaching it requires some physical effort due to the elevated position. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and prepare for uneven terrain, especially when coastal winds pick up.

The lighthouse gained worldwide attention after appearing in a popular television series as a filming location for a fictional city. This led to significant tourist interest from fans wanting to visit the actual filming site.
