Embalse de Sobrón, Embalse del río Ebro
Embalse de Sobrón is a water reservoir in the Ebro river valley between Álava and Burgos provinces, ringed by gentle hills and open fields. The dam was completed in 1960 and holds about 20 million cubic meters of water when full, with an average depth of 7 meters that reaches up to 33 meters in deeper sections.
The dam was built in 1960 as an infrastructure project to store water and manage flooding for the region. This construction transformed the historical land use of the Tobalina valley from farmland into a water storage area and shaped the area's development for decades to come.
The reservoir sits at a provincial boundary and has become woven into the rhythm of rural life here. Visitors and locals come to fish, walk, or simply spend time outdoors, making it a gathering place for those seeking moments of quiet rest in nature.
The site is reachable by car via local roads, with nearby villages serving as starting points for walks and picnics. There are no major facilities directly at the dam, so visitors should bring water, proper footwear for walking, and dress for changing weather conditions throughout the seasons.
The valley beneath the water was once farmland that was flooded when the dam was built, creating an entirely different landscape. Local stories recall how the construction brought new people to the area and permanently changed the lives of long-time residents.
