Montjuïc Cable Car, Urban aerial tramway in Montjuïc, Spain
The Montjuïc Cable Car is an urban aerial tramway system in Barcelona connecting the city center to Montjuïc hill through suspended cabins over 752 meters (about 2,470 feet). The installation passes above treetops and streets, carrying several dozen passengers at a time.
The cable car opened in June 1970 and transformed access to the castle atop Montjuïc, which had previously been reached mainly on foot or by bus. The installation was later modernized for the 1992 Olympics and has remained a fixed link between city and hill ever since.
The cabins date from the period when the hill was redesigned for the Olympics, and today families often use them for a relaxed ascent. Those who ride on sunny days see many visitors photographing and pointing between sky and harbor as the city spreads below.
The cabins run daily from late morning onward, and operation depends heavily on weather conditions as wind can interrupt the ride. Those who arrive early in the day usually find shorter wait times, while afternoons and weekends produce longer queues.
The cabins glide above the park and sports facilities, so during the ascent you suddenly look down on swimming pools and running tracks built for the 1992 games. Many visitors notice only during the ride how green the slopes of Montjuïc truly are.
