Palacio de Altamira is a fortified residence with rectangular towers and thick defensive walls located in the historic heart of Elche. The building features multiple floors connected by stone staircases that lead through different exhibition areas designed within the original structure.
Construction began around 1500 when Gutierre de Cárdenas ordered the building of a fortress that would serve both as a stronghold and a noble residence. The architecture combines military engineering with features suited to comfortable aristocratic living.
The palace now serves as a museum displaying archaeological finds and historical objects that tell the story of daily life in the region. You can see how people lived and what mattered to them across different periods.
Access is through Plaza Palau in the city center where the building is straightforward to locate. Guided tours operate most days except Mondays, so checking current opening times beforehand is recommended.
