Els Hostalets d'en Bas

Els Hostalets d'en Bas is an old settlement in La Vall d'en Bas built with stone houses arranged along a main street. The buildings feature wooden balconies and narrow lanes that follow the original medieval layout, with a tight arrangement of structures that speaks to its defensive and practical origins.

The settlement began as lodging stations for travelers using the medieval royal road between Olot and Vic. This role as a way station shaped its growth and the arrangement of its buildings over the centuries.

The place reflects how rural communities lived and organized themselves, with buildings and streets that still show the patterns of traditional village life. Stone construction and modest wooden details speak to a way of life centered on farming and local crafts.

The village sits in a mountain valley where weather can change quickly and narrow streets may become slippery after rain. Sturdy shoes and a jacket are practical choices when walking through the lanes to stay comfortable and safe.

One complete street called Calle Teixeida holds National Monument status because it preserves the medieval street structure exactly as it was built. This level of preservation is rare and offers insight into how such places were actually organized and lived in.
