Sant Miquel de Castelló

Sant Miquel de Castelló is a Romanesque church located in the Vall d'en Bas in the Pyrenees. The building has a single nave with a barrel vault constructed from small stone blocks bound together with lime mortar in neat rows.

The structure dates to the Romanesque period and originally served as a chapel for the viscounts of the nearby Bas castle. The fortress itself is first documented in records from the 11th century.

The building is named after Saint Michael and served as a spiritual gathering place for the valley's inhabitants over many centuries. Its simple design reflects the practical needs of mountain communities rather than grand religious displays.

The site is located in a mountainous area and is best reached on foot via hiking trails through the Vall d'en Bas. The terrain can be rough, so suitable footwear is necessary.

The bell tower with a single opening is the only element that clearly identifies the building as a church. This simple design shows that the structure was built for the practical needs of a remote mountain community rather than for elaborate displays.
