Castell de Fadrell

Castell de Fadrell is a medieval fortress atop Magdalena hill with defensive walls and towers forming three distinct sections. The upper Alcazaba, middle Albacara, and lower area work together as an integrated defensive structure.

The fortress was built in the 10th century during Islamic rule and served as a strategic watchtower. By the 12th century, it came under El Cid's control and became a tributary possession.

The Interpretation Center displays archaeological findings and explains how the fortress shaped regional development over centuries. Visitors can see exhibits that reveal the place's importance to the people who lived here.

The site offers free access to the grounds and Interpretation Center with advance reservations through the City Museum. Wear comfortable shoes as the hilltop location involves steep paths and uneven terrain.

The fortress combines rammed earth and masonry using Islamic architectural techniques that remain preserved from its original construction. This mix of building methods reveals how medieval builders skillfully combined different materials for strength.
