Castelló de la Plana

Castelló de la Plana is the provincial capital of Castellón in the Valencian Community, situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the rocky hills of the Pals desert. The city spreads across flat terrain, extending westward from the coast to hills roughly 7 kilometers inland.

The settlement relocated from La Magdalena hill to the plain in 1251 with permission from King James I of Aragon. Growth accelerated as a trading center during the 13th century, leading to the construction of an early market hall and the first religious buildings.

The city layout features a geometric design with straight streets and open squares reflecting its relocation to the plain during the Middle Ages. The Gaieta Fests in March transform the streets into vibrant celebrations with nine days of music, street events, and traditional costumes.

The city center can be explored on foot, especially around the Plaza Mayor and historic neighborhoods. Accommodation ranges from budget hostels to luxury hotels, all within walking distance of the main pedestrian streets.

Street names in the city center follow Valencian language standards with bilingual signs alongside Spanish designations, creating a linguistic blend seen throughout. Traditional ceramic workshops scattered around town continue producing hand-painted tiles, keeping alive a centuries-old local craft.
